 Seaford Bay (Photo: Neal R)Pumpkins at the ready, here we are in October and some of you will no doubt be gearing up for the modern version of Halloween, an American invention designed to boost the sales of greetings cards and all manner of orange, purple and black tat. But that’s right at the end of the month and there is plenty going on before that that doesn’t involve witches or the undead (well, not looking too closely at some of our musicians – Ed.). There are good reasons to go into the garden on October nights and look skywards, it’ll get you out of the house and anyway there’s nothing to watch on television. The first full moon after the Harvest Moon quite often falls in October and even has its own name, the Hunter’s Moon. Then there’s the Draconid Meteor Shower, visible exclusively in the northern hemisphere between October 6th and 10th. An even more impressive meteor shower that is visible in both hemispheres is the Orionid meteor shower, which runs from October 2nd until early November. It is named after Orion as it is usually visible in the same part of the sky as the constellation. At the peak of the meteor shower, as many as 20 meteors are visible every hour (cloud level and light pollution permitting…) A much easier and warmer way to see stars in October is to go to a Splash Point gig (full listings of 30 gigs below). At Seaford on the 13th you can see trombone legend Winston Rollins, and at Eastbourne on the 29th drummer Matt Skelton will be saluting another drum star: Shelly Manne.
