Hello Jazz Mathematical Historians
It’s the tenth month with the eighth name: octogon, octopus 🐙, octet – October.
And we’ve got the Romans to thank for that because they decided to change what was a 10 month year into 12 months. They did this by cleverly adding January and February at the start of the year without so much as a by-your-leave, thereby making the names of several months unworkable. So now we’ve got September (sept = seventh), October (see above), November (novem +ninth) and December (decem = tenth).
What could they have been thinking of? Well, they had a winter gap of two months that had no names at all until January and February were invented. But things were not plain sailing and they kept losing days, so there wasn’t much self-congratulation going on in Roman calendar-making circles until Julius Caesar stuck his oar in, said ‘We’ll have 365 days in a year and that’s the end of it,’ and then added Leap Years to balance everything up. Julius lost interest in the calendar (and indeed everything else…) when the Ides of March came along.

It would be immensely satisfying to be able to tell you that we’ve got a couple of octets playing at Splash Point this month – unfortunately the closest we can get to it (and it’s pretty damn close) is Neal’s septet, who will be at Eastbourne on October 28th. The full listings are below, including news of TWO new venues! (🎉🥳🥂), but first wander down memory lane with us, as we look at pictures from September’s SPJC gigs.
