You all know the song ‘April in Paris’ – right? First featured in the 1932 Broadway musical ‘Walk a Little Faster’ and written by Yip Harburg (music) and Vernon Duke (lyrics). He’d never been to Paris so he had to get a brochure from a travel agent to get him in the mood to write the words…

In the song, a woman sits in a Paris café drinking wine. It’s April, of course. But instead of remembering some past romantic encounter, she has never been in love. She wishes she had been so that she’d have something to remember.

Doris Day sang it in the film ‘April in Paris’ – but the version we all know is from the 1957 Count Basie album “April in Paris”. The recording has a memorable “fake-out” ending where the song appears to end, then Basie yells, “One more time!” and later “One more once!” This showstopper was a staple of Basie’s live set for decades and was even featured (along with a cameo from Basie) in the 1974 comedy ‘Blazing Saddles’ – and if you haven’t seen that you really should!

LISTEN OUT for Neal’s version of the song – not telling you where and when he’ll be performing it so you’ll have to follow him around this month if you want to hear it (and who wouldn’t?)

==>> Oh, and the big news is that Neal’s residency at Raffles London has been renewed for a further six months, and by popular demand he’s turned it into a piano/vocal gig 🙂

Check our listings below for when he’s there, and cone and be wowed by this amazing place <<==

COMMUNITY NEWS

1. Easter Bonnets?

We’re always collecting hats, gloves and scarves for refugees – so get those fingers a-knitting!

We need baby, child and adult ones please. There are plenty of patterns available on the world wide interwebby thingy. Thanks!

2. Thanks to YOU for your interest in the Roger Daltrey guitar last month.

We have a buyer, and it has raised a substantial sum for a very good cause. 🙂

3. Talking of fundraising… the venue we use for our SPJ Club in Eastbourne needs a new roof! It’s run as a not-for-profit, and is a real community focal point… so please if you can, drop a few quid (or a few hundred!) in here:
